Murphy. Bed that is.

So, when we were designing our basement, we decided that we wanted to include an additional area for our guests to sleep.  One problem I had though, was that I did not want it to detract from the room or take up any more space (okay, I guess that is two problems then, right?).  Here is our solution:  a Murphy Bed.

A Murphy Bed is a bed that folds down out of the wall (think 1940s hotel rooms- you know I am a sucker for vintage!).  They are coming back in style, especially for space conservation, and well, you know we like to do things differently.  Matt did an awesome job coming up with the plans and executing them once we decided on the design of the bed.  I won't lie, it certainly wasn't an easy project, but the end result and the uniqueness of it all makes it worth all the effort!

The bed we designed holds a complete mattress set (box springs and mattress) and sits flush against the floor (think similar to a platform bed) when extended.

I designed the curtains to resemble a window, which helps to diminish the fact that there is a large bed waiting to come out of the wall!  In addition, the curtains also help add style to the bed once it is down, so that it looks less like a Murphy Bed and more like a bed in a guest room- WIN WIN all around!  There are hooks that hold the curtains back while the bed is extended, they just aren't visible in the picture.

Here is a shot of the finished product.

Up.
and Down.

Be Blessed.
